Stack Overflow supports markdown for formatting posts, and in a limited form for comments as well.
When posting questions or answers, there is help available for markdown; there is a "?" button on the top righthand corner.
Similarly, there is a "Help" link available when posting comments, that links to the information about markdown in comments.
