When I have interest in a new topic, usually I start to read one or a few books and articles about it. But as a new comer to the topic it is hard to decide what I was reading is good or out-dated and misleading. Here on Stackoverflow we have tons of peoples who have went through the study part on that topic, so they already know the good resources.

So my question is how we can utilize these people knowledge to help a new comer know about the topic of his choice, how can I ask for a beginner guide if book and other resource recommendations are off-topic?
