I recently came across a first post review written in Spanish only.

I'm a native Spanish speaker and answer looks ok.

I want to flag it, but I am not sure if it "require moderator attention".

    I'd flag it for moderation attention and I'd expect the moderator to simply delete it leaving a note for the writer (probably hinting about some possible Area 51 proposal for that language). If the writer isn't able to write in English he shouldn't be writing on SO in the first place. – Bakuriu Jun 30 '14 at 18:38

    If you're a fluent speaker of the language, AND if you have the time, then providing a translation is a good thing to do. In my opinion, it should be forbidden for people who DON'T speak the language to use automated tools like Google Translate, then replace the answer with a poor translation. – Dawood ibn Kareem Jun 30 '14 at 20:31

Update

My original answer here is wrong. We do not translate posts. The FAQ points this out:

Please do not translate posts for the OP. They need to be able to respond to feedback, and if they cannot themselves translate the post we cannot be certain that they can understand any feedback provided (by comments, answers, or Help Center content).

So the new answer is: flag it as "Very Low Quality" or as "Unclear what you're asking". You could leave a comment for the OP, informing them that they should post in English.

Since I wrote the original answer, Stack Overflow in Spanish has gone live, as has Stack Overflow in Portuguese, Stack Overflow in Russian and Stack Overflow in Japanese. If the poster is posting in any of these languages, you can refer them to these respective Stack Overflow versions.

Note that proposals for Stack Exchange sites in other languages are not currently supported.

The best thing to do is translate it to English. You may want to leave a comment for the OP as well, since Stack Overflow is meant to be in English.

There is no need to flag this - it is not an offense.

You could also point the OP to the proposal on Area51 for a Spanish Stack Overflow.

Flag the post as "Very Low Quality" or "Unclear what you're asking".

Stack Overflow is an English-only site, and all the questions and answers must be in English.

From the blog entry titled Non-English Question Policy:

It is not, nor has it ever been, our goal to be the one place in the world for all programming information in every possible human language.

  • Direct question posters to native language resources.
  • It is not the community's goal to teach English.
  • The question asker should put some effort into the question.

For questions

Even if you're a native speaker of the said language, I would refrain from editing the post, as it could cause several issues:

  • The original meaning of the question might change during translation. How you interpret the OP's question may not be how they originally meant it to be.

  • If the OP doesn't know English, further communications won't be possible. What if the only language that OP knows is Spanish? They won't be able to clarify the questions in the comments section, and might not even understand the answers they are given.

For answers

As with questions, answers also have similar issues:

  • If the answer is written in a language other than English, it is pretty much useless to non-English speakers who are visiting the question. It will just confuse people who end up on Stack Overflow via search engines.

  • It affects the voting system. A lot of people refuse to vote on content they don't understand. If the answer is written in Spanish, a user who otherwise has the required domain-specific knowledge might not be able to properly review the post and give it the feedback it deserves.

In order to avoid all these situations, you can just flag the post, and request that it be removed.

  • I flagged recently a question in Spanish (stackoverflow.com/questions/39131948/query-group-concat-mysql) to moderator attention and the flag was declined. It was translated into English later (if you check the history of edits, it was initially google-translated). If you speak the language fluently, you can add an English translation above the original. Most of the issues with translation are caused by removing the original... don't; simply push it to the bottom of the answer.

If you come across a foreign language answer in a language you don't understand, downvote it. An answer cannot be useful if it defies understanding. The rationale for downvotes (not useful or unclear) applies perfectly in this case. Leave a comment "I didn't find this answer useful because I couldn't understand it"

P.S. For all you know, it may even BE gibberish.

  • I think this answer has good intentions, adding an English translation, at a high level, seems like a good compromise. But there is still the case that OP may not understand any English answers that are sure to arise - and it shouldn't be up to the community to translate the answer for OP, either. – Bender the Greatest Feb 27 '20 at 15:45

What I do, whenever I come across an answer in a language I know well enough, if the question is clearly useful and good is to translate it to english. Then I edit the original question, replace the content and leave a comment to the original poster.

Flagging it seems wrong to me in that context, because what is the moderator supposed to do?

If however the answer is in a language I do not know I do usually just leave a comment, indicating that it should be written in english.

Since SO is an English-speaking site, our aim is to have good answers in English. That said, deleting answers in other languages does not further that aim. Answers in obscure languages are not useful, but they are correspondingly rare. Answers in popular languages are useful because they can be translated into English.

At first you should be politely asked to reanswer it in English, because all others also can English (maybe it was a mistake).
